It does sound very nice and gives warm fuzzy's to hear all the good things the government has done and will do for the country. The reality as I see it is quite different.Throwing money at problems will have only a minimum impact. The answer lies more with the spirit and determination of the citizens to achieve something better for themselves.Welfare only works if we are living in a buoyant economy to provide the necessary funds. It is time for the nanny state to disappear and the true quality of human endeavor to be expressed.Welfare is more additive than cocaine.

A lot to be pleased about in budget.
However things like School Kids needing help.
would be fine if we could leave it to the parents, but with drugs, booze, gambling(SKYCITY)we can not.
Look after the young ones NOW and we will avoid a lot of pain in the future.

    PM -
1. Child Poverty is indeed unacceptable in NZ and MUST be URGENTLY "sustainably" addressed. PLEASE "do" what you can - and more!! Things that were done in :"olden days" aren't necessarily "wrong" or inappropriate these days. In "Old Days" we scarce had any poverty - and NZ should get back to that status asap!

2. I wish to raise a serious concern - you and Bill English (& all of your Gov't members) regularly speak about "Back to Surplus by 2015" - but "Joe Bloggs" Kiwi doesn't understand really what that means - and with respect you need to better, yet more simply, explain it, and it's true ramifications.
I believe the "Joe Bloggs" equate "Back to Surplus" to being "In the Black (i.e. in credit) at the Bank" (which of course it does not) - it simply means we don't have to borrow even more. The "Joe Bloggs" don't understand that ceasation of "debit Surplus" creates for the first time in a very long while the chance for NZ to START the process of paying off it's National Debt (huge at that - and thereby remove/reduce interest payments - and who knows how long low interest will persist to our good fortune). I suspect "Joe Bloggs" confuses the concept of "Surplus" with "being in actual Credit" immediately. You know; I know; a lot of Kiwis know - that with "Back to Surplus" we only begin to be able to address the repayment of our HUGE National Debt - and that that will take a long time (& in present conditions even some LUCK - as well as deliberate innovative policies imposed and sustained).
I believe and respectfully suggest that you need to start "hammering" to the whole Electorate the state of our "National Debt" and it's need to be substantially reduced (albeit over time - but deliberately [and avoid interest rate "hikes" made externally, over which we have no control]). Many "ferral" people will think and believe in 2015 when "Back to Surplus" is realised and achieved that - "Oh goodie, now the Government has got money to spend on us poor folk" - when you won't - BUT THEY WON'T IUNDERSTAND THAT given their present state of "ignorant" mind. I say "ignorant" not unkindly - they have been mis-led so badly by Opposition parties to understand "fact" from "fiction" (for example - "Asset Sales" as opposed to the reality - "partiaal Asset sales") that they are quite understandably somewhere between "confused"; "Bloody-minded"; and/or "ignorant".
PLEASE HEED MY ADVICE HEREIN - as the Country needs to understand that "Back to Surplus" is just the start of achievement of the full necessary process!
PLEASE; PLEASE; PLEASE!!!

no mention is ever made regarding the huge interest charged on student loans if you live overseas. 6.8% as against 4.99% etc for a house mortgage. When my daughter pays the $3000 she has to for a year the interest that comes out is $2600-no wonder these kids throw their hands up in the air and struggle to cope with that. They see no light at the end of the tunnel and just want to stick their heads in the sand.

Re the current child poverty moral panic: I would like to point out what nobody seems to be voicing; namely that it is the responsibility of the parents to feed and clothe their children. I saw Hone Harawira shaking his head in disgust on tv at the lack of provision for child poverty, but in truth all parents are to some extent supported by government money already either through a benefit or through child support measures. Furthermore, Maori have been given 2.5 Billion (I think) in treaty settlements, plus hundreds of thousands of acres returned to them, surely expressly for the purpose of benefiting their own people so where is the benefit? The government is still battling to overcome the feeling of entitlement people have developed over the previous decades of handouts. John Key's government is doing an outstanding job and their policies are exactly what this country needs. Well done.

Great Budget. The building industry is such a huge factor in our economy and the increased employment that will result within the ancillary industries (such as roofing, furniture, carpet, paint etc, etc)is huge.
More jobs = more income = more tax income = more social services.
Well done. Please keep up the pressure on the local councils to free up the land.

Not a lot to make the older brigade feel more comfortable.Getting harder to keep up with the garden. ACC wipe you as you get older--any sign of Arthritis
and it doesn't matter, how high you fell or hard you tripped!Power, rates, food & fuel all hard to cope with on the handout we are grateful and thankful to get. Dentistry, clothing, house maintainence--all on the backburner, of necessity--even hard to shout the grandlings the smallest pleasures. Cant afford health insurance any more after paying for it right through our younger and earning years, when we actually had little need for it!--- Be really nice to be able to loosen off the belt, just a little in our reclining years! Thanks for trying, anyway.Regards.
